The only thing left is... brand

How to survive in a world that just removed options altogether

The only thing left is… brand.

In the space of 12 months, the way we seek answers or options for, well, anything has changed dramatically.

We used to search, compare, explore.
Google gave us options.
We chose which.

Now we ask AI. And it tells us.
Even if we search, AI answers first.
And it increasingly doesn’t give us options.
Just an answer.

Is it faster?
In terms of an immediate response, probably.
Ultimately because AI removes the thinking or need to select.

Which is proving seriously disruptive to how we market or sell anything.

How do you join the conversation when there’s not one?

Voice will disrupt all this even more. Soon we’ll ask our phones, cars, kitchens, speakers, TVs, whatever is nearest… for whatever we need.

And Apple, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic or whoever owns the infrastructure will answer - and probably sell it, too.

The price of speed?
Selection.

That’ll just get done for us.

UNLESS…

When we ask, we override it.
Override it with preference.
Taste, affinity or loyalty. By name.

So the choice moving forward is either:
- the answer that gets handed to you
- or the answer you ask for

Pizza by whoever the Alexa algo decides you’ll like best.
Or hot honey artichoke by Pizza Pilgrims, because it’s your go-to.

And let’s not pretend that isn’t already how social works. Meta serves you content its algo decides you’ll like - not the friends and followers you actually chose.

So where does that leave us as business owners and marketers?

With only one answer:
Be the override.

The brand they ask for.
The decision not the default.
Their go-to.

In a world that now delivers definitive and pre-selected answers not options…
The only thing left… is brand.
